Vierzig quadratische Tafeln: japanische und deutsche Texte zum Wald sowie Fotografien von Wald in Japan (Honshu) und Deutschland (Berlin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Brandenburg) – zwei Ländern, in denen die Vorstellung von Wald als Ort des Rückzugs, der Stille, der Einsamkeit und der Ewigkeit eine lange Tradition besitzt.
Text und Bild stehen gleichberechtigt nebeneinander. Weder beschreibt der Text das Bild noch illustriert das Bild den Text, sondern beide sind verschiedene Repräsentationen desselben. Dabei präsentiert sich der Text in seiner Materialität selbst als Bild mit dem gleichen Format, dem gleichen Papier wie die Fotografien, die sich umgekehrt dem immateriellen Schwarz-Weiß der Texte angleichen. Das Quadrat der Tafeln ist die Schnittmenge aus dem Querformat des Landschaftsbildes und dem Hochformat des Buches.

Text and image stand side by side on an equal footing. Neither the text describes the image nor does the image illustrate the text, but both are different representations of the same. Thereby the text in its materiality presents itself as an image with the same format, the same paper as the photographs, which conversely match the immaterial black and white of the texts. The square of the panels is the intersection of the landscape image’s horizontal format and the book’s vertical format.
